Facilities

The University of Delaware Department of Geological Sciences offers an eclectic mix of facilities and equipment in support of the teaching and research missions of the faculty. To get more information on specific facilities or laboratories, please click on the links within individual faculty research pages. Although a separate entity operated by University Museums, the newly renovated Mineralogical Museum is also housed in Penny Hall.

We have unusual field equipment, including one of the few University operated AUVs (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) as well as a CHIRP sonar system for coastal research and courses and ground-penetrating radar and seismograph systems for near-surface geophysics projects. Computing facilities include the current installation of systems and software for a Global Visualization Lab in Penny Hall. Geomicrobiology research is carried out in labs in both Penny Hall and the Delaware Biotechnology Institute (DBI).
Faculty within the department also have access to outstanding university facilities and equipment through their collaboration with joint faculty colleagues, including a terrestrial LIDAR system, the UD airship, and the coastal research vessel, the R/V Hugh R. Sharp.
